“As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17
"Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ." 1 Corinthians 11:1
"In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." Titus 2:7-8
"Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:9
“The object of mentoring is not perfection but improvement. Don’t feel as if you have to be flawless before you can begin to impart your wisdom and skills to others. Also, realize that the underlying purpose of mentoring is not for people to act differently but rather to become different. Such a change certainly doesn’t happen overnight; the process is evolutionary, not revolutionary." John Maxwell
Read "What is Christian Mentoring, and How Do I Do It?" by Chelsea Knight at Cru.org. "Do you feel ready to begin helping someone else grow in their Christian faith or spiritual journey? Taking that role in another person’s life is what we often refer to as mentoring. Being a mentor means taking an influential and important role in another person’s life. It sounds like something reserved for experts or people with decades of wisdom. But that’s not necessarily the case. If you have a relationship with Christ, are living in community and are growing in your faith, you can come alongside others and point them to Jesus. If you aspire to mentor others, here is a framework to help get you started."
"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you fail to meet the test!" 2 Corinthians 13:5.
"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24.
Examine your heart when it comes to being a mentor for motives, concerns, readiness, and equipment.
Abba Father, I pray for those You may lead me to mentor, "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the Gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God." (Philippians 1:1-11).
READY: Now that you have studied Biblically, trained Spiritually, examined your heart, and prayed over this challenge, you are ready to undertake being a mentor. You equipped yourself Spiritually, mentally, and physically, so get ready to go girl! This is a tough challenge! If you don't feel ready, trust that God has set you up to succeed!
SET: When God sent Moses with a message, Moses knew it may not be received or go well for him, to the point that in Exodus 4, Moses complained, "I am slow of speech and tongue” and said to the Lord, "Please send someone else". But Moses did go! Moses was later described as being "powerful in speech and action" (Acts 7:22). When it comes to being a mentor, you may think, "Please send someone else" but God is calling you and will overcome your fears and faults to work through you. When we trust God, our inadequacy becomes our legacy.
How can you make being a mentor a lifelong discipline?
Pray to persevere in being a mentor.
"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised." Hebrews 10:35-36
