“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:" Philippians 2:3-5
"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12
"...if it is to lead, do it diligently." Romans 12:8
“We are all leaders- whether we want to be or not. There is always someone we are influencing- either leading them to good- or away from good.” Leif Erikson
Read "9 Distinguishing Characteristics of a Servant Leader" from biblicalleadership.com. "The following acrostic for the word 'character' outlines the nine distinguishing marks of the character of servant leaders I have recognized as priority areas for those of us seeking to be servant leaders. Christ-like servant leaders are: Content; Humble; Accountable; Reliable; Approachable; Consistent; Trustworthy; Exemplary; Respectful. This is by no means an exhaustive list but provides an initial biblical framework for Christ-like character development."
"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? —unless indeed you fail to meet the test!" 2 Corinthians 13:5.
"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24.
Examine your heart when it comes to leading by example for motives, concerns, readiness, and equipment.
"Lord, Help our leaders to remain focused on you, to live and to lead as humble, grateful, assured, and generous servants.; to live and to lead as an example; to live and to lead as faithful followers of Jesus. As we pray for our leaders, we also pray this prayer for ourselves. In our relationships with one another, help us to have the same mindset as Jesus who, despite being in very nature God, humbled himself to full humanness. To serve others. Not for personal gain but so that others would know you. By Your grace, may our example, our words, our actions and our reactions point people to you too.Help us Lord, we pray! Amen." (From "A Prayer for Servant Leadership" from The Salvation Army)
READY: Now that you have studied Biblically, trained Spiritually, examined your heart, and prayed over this challenge, you are ready to undertake leading by example. You equipped yourself Spiritually, mentally, and physically, so get ready to go girl! This is a tough challenge! If you don't feel ready, trust that God has set you up to succeed!
SET: When God sent Moses with a message, Moses knew it may not be received or go well for him, to the point that in Exodus 4, Moses complained, "I am slow of speech and tongue” and said to the Lord, "Please send someone else". But Moses did go! Moses was later described as being "powerful in speech and action" (Acts 7:22). When it comes to leading by example, you may think, "Please send someone else" but God is calling you and will overcome your fears and faults to work through you. When we trust God, our inadequacy becomes our legacy.
How can you make leading by example a lifelong discipline?
Pray to persevere in leading by example.
"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised." Hebrews 10:35-36
